Discovering this backpacker lodge was a fortunate find. Tucked away in Wilderness beneath the trees, Fairy Knowe has much to offer, with dorm options as well as private ensuite cottages. The dorms have shared ablutions and a self-catering kitchen, but the lodge also serves cooked meals and has braai facilities.
The reception area has a lounge with full DSTV and free Wifi. Free tea and coffee are available on a self-service trolley in the dining area, which displays a colourful mural of Wilderness, doubling up as an activity map. In the evening, guests can write their name on the board under the breakfast option they would like the following morning, served at 9am. The choices are either an omelette or muesli and yoghurt, for R35. I chose the omelette, which was ample for Damian and I to share – a 3 egg omelette filled with tomato, onion, green pepper, cheese, mushroom and bacon; served with two slices of toast, a muffin and butter and jam in ramekins; and a glass of fresh orange juice.
The lodge is fully licenced as has a welcoming bar and entertainment area stocked with board games for evening amusement. Fairy Knowe is also a hub for booking activities in the area
