This lovely restaurant is pleasing as far as both food and family entertainment are concerned. Set on a tranquil farm with a view of the Howick Falls, the property is home to some adorable creatures – all in miniature – miniature horses and miniature donkeys, a dexter bull and a few cows, pot belly pigs, goats, dwarf rabbits, guinea pigs and some chickens. On a sunny day it was a treat to choose a table at the edge of the paddock and be visited by the animals, curious to see if they could nab some treats, while listening to the sounds of birds. The playground is equipped with jungle gyms and swings and is within sight of the eating area.
The animal farm and playground are free to patrons of the café, though visitors not dining may access them at a cost of R30 for adults and R20 for children. An extensive menu includes breakfast until 11h30, light meals, salads, starters, pasta, mains, grills, tea time treats and desserts with sufficient vegetarian options. The kids menu offers a large selection as well such as macaroni and cheese, lasagne, fish and chips, chicken nuggets and chips and is reasonably priced. Hot and cold beverages as well as beer and wine are served.
The indoor restaurant has an old farmhouse feel with the option of sitting at benches in the outdoor café. As we visited late afternoon we chose from the tea time treats – a good cappuccino and a rich, moist chocolate cake. Service was friendly and quick, and this is definitely a place worth visiting more than once.
There is no direct wheelchair access to the bathrooms from the outdoor café, but there is ramp access to the main restaurant, where the bathrooms are located, from the parking area. All facilities are closed on Mondays.
