After about two years out of the saddle, it was wonderful to get to ride again. Although not as brave as I was in my teenage riding years, I was excited. The farm where my sister stables her Arab mare, Gill, is home to some lovely Nooitegedacht ponies and I was given a lovely mare, named Secret, to ride.
The three of us set out and I soon gained much confidence with Secret being the more calm and easy ride of the three horses. Where the others wouldn’t walk through water, Secret plodded through happily; where the others had to get off to lead their horses over a section that scared the horses, Secret picked her way through carefully. Through bush, under highway tunnels and up steep hills, this sweet little pony took me with very little effort or guidance from myself. She cantered when I encouraged, and stopped when I asked. I was surprised to be told she had only been under saddle for four and a half months.
Needless to say, after a two hour ride I found myself very stiff for the next week or so, but happy to have been on a horse again.
